The old Bendel State Government established a couple of tertiary institutions across the State including the College of Education, Agbor which was established in 1980. The College located in a serene and academic-friendly environment in Agbor, the Administrative Headquarters of Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, was founded to train students to become excellent teachers who will positively impact the Nigerian Education sector. The institution offered programmes across disciplines and provided her students with facilities for a comfortable learning environment.
The profile of the College rose such that it did not only become a highly desired citadel of learning but a study centre of excellence both in academics and discipline. Consequently, there was a great quest for studentship admission into the College beyond the confines of the State. The quest was so irresistible that the tempo of study and studentship became nonrestrictive. The College further got the requisite approval to run degree programmes in affiliation with Delta State University, Abraka, in the year 2006/2007 academic session, an endeavor it has conducted creditably thus far. Only recently, students who graduated from the DELSU Degree Programme of the institution (College of Education) were mobilized to participate in batch A Stream 1 of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Programme. With time, there was agitation for the upgrade of the College of Education to a University. After reviewing the situation, the Delta State Government proposed a bill to the State house of Assembly to upgrade the College to a University. This was promptly passed and subsequently signed into law on 25th Febuary, 2021.
