The process of establishing Kano University of Science and Technology (KUST) Wudil began in 1973 during the administration of the first Military Governor, Police Commissioner, Late Alhaji Audu Bako; where Justice Sani Aikawa’s Committee was established to advise Government on how the State can own a University that can cater for manpower requirements.

In 1988, a Taskforce under the Chairmanship of Professor Ibrahim H. Umar, former Vice Chancellor, Bayero University, Kano was constituted and submitted its report in February, 1988, recommending the establishment of the University at Bagauda Lake Hotel.

Subsequently, a Technical Committee was inaugurated in July, 1989 to study, under the chairmanship of Alhaji Abdulkarim Hassan to study the report submitted by the Taskforce.

Consequent upon this, approval was granted by the National Universities Commission (NUC) for the State to establish a University in 1991. In the same year, an eleven (11) member Implementation Committee was appointed and assigned the responsibility for the smooth take-off of the University. However, due to technical problems and insufficient funds, Government suspended the idea.

In January, 2000, a committee was constituted on the revival of establishing the University by the former Kano State Executive Governor, Dr. Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, under the chairmanship of the present executive Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. The Committee recommended the immediate revisiting of the project. Government then constituted an 11-member Implementation Committee under the chairmanship of Prof. Umar Garba Dambatta to actualize the take-off of the University.

In April, 2001, the University commenced academic activities with 88 Students and two (2) Faculties namely: Faculty of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology (FAAAT) and Faculty of Science and Science Education (FASSE).

During the 2002/2003 academic session, two (2) additional Faculties were established:

1. Faculty of Environmental Sciences
2. Faculty of Engineering

Similarly, during 2011/2012 academic session, Faculty of Computing and Mathematical Sciences was established. Additional programmes were mounted in the Faculty of Science and Science Education (Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Science Education) and Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences (Geology and Urban and Regional Planning). Presently, the University runs Twenty seven (27) programmes in Six (6) Faculties.
