Chairman's Note
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the website of the Committee of State Universities in Nigeria (COPSUN), a Committee which was established in Abuja in 2005. Pro-Chancellors and Chairmen of Councils of State-Owned Universities constitute membership of the Committee.
The Committee is a non-profit, non-partisan and non-political umbrella body, conscious of its responsibility for University education in the various institutions and the need for academic excellence and scholarship.
The Committee is aware of the difficulties confronting university education in the various states and is conscious of the pivotal role of University education in the human and material development of the society vis-Ã -vis the need for joint action in achieving quality education and high standards;
The Committee is established to:
- serve as an avenue for discussing common or unique problems relating but not limited to inter-University cooperation, maintenance of academic standards, staff recruitment and student affairs, international cooperation, general university development and matters related thereto;
- serve as a forum through which the opinion of State universities can be expressed on matters concerning education in the country, as well as providing members an opportunity for formulating action-plans on any national issues to be communicated to Government at Federal and State levels;
- collect, classify and disseminate information on higher education and carry out research;
- encourage and empower members of COPSUN to address developmental challenges and become an effective voice in national, regional and global matters;
- contribute to the improvement of leadership, institutional management and the policy environment of university education in Nigeria;
- provide advisory, mediatory, and reconciliatory services to its members;
- organise, encourage and support public fora for information dissemination and exchange and policy dialogue on issues of higher education in Nigeria;
- promote gender and social equity in policies on higher education and in the delivery of higher education services;
- promote linkages with the international higher education community, private Industries and Local and International development partners;
- support and facilitate the maintenance of the highest standard of education in State-owned Nigerian Universities;
- promote optimal governance practices to ensure effective and uninterrupted delivery of high-quality tertiary education and other services in the State-owned Universities and devise and promote a peer-review mechanism;
- promote unity and cooperation among State-owned universities; and
- do any such thing deemed proper and legal for the advancement of COPSUN.
The Committee has so far held six Biennial Conferences at Kaduna State University in 2010; River State University of Science & Technology, Port-Harcourt in 2012; Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State in 2014; Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State in 2016, Benue State University, Makurdi, Benue State in 2020 and Osun State University, Osogbo in 2022, where fundamental issues were discussed and resolved in Nigeria.
The Committee is already planning for its 7th Biennial Conference which will hold early in 2024.
